Senior Associates can access a wide range of learning programs that build technical capability, leadership skills, business development expertise, and internal networks.
The firm also promotes open and candid career conversations, supported by continuous, real-time feedback through HL Dialogue. Annual career progression briefings provide greater transparency, helping you plan next steps and discuss your career path with clarity and confidence. You can also seek different perspectives through confidential one-to-one coaching and mentoring support, available as required.

HL Lead & Learn programs
Senior Associate Intensives
Senior Associates are invited to two Intensives: Creating Your Future and Becoming a Trusted Advisor, as well as BOOST: a virtual multi-module BD Accelerator. Creating Your Future: Senior Associate Intensive 1 is an in-person regional program that helps participants clarify the firm’s expectations of their new role, think strategically about their career, develop effective and inclusive leadership skills to bring out the best in their team, and begin to master the right mindset to kickstart their business development activities. Becoming a Trusted Advisor: Senior Associate Intensive 2 is an in-person regional program that promotes commercial thinking, and a strong client focus through sessions on building trust and effective client conversations. Participants gain advanced knowledge of pricing models, and a sound understanding of how to drive the profitability of a law firm.
These programs build key skills from the Global Lawyer Development Framework, including oral communication, client effectiveness, personal effectiveness, creative problem-solving, business development, and firm-mindedness. Invitations to Creating Your Future will be shared shortly after promotion, with the invitation to Becoming a Trusted Advisor issued approximately 18 months later.
Momentum
Momentum is designed for high-performing senior lawyers with the potential to progress to partner. The highly interactive in-person global program provides opportunities for them to hone their business and leadership skills while receiving feedback from partners and coaches, and to build relationships with their peers. Pre- and post-program coaching helps to deepen their learning. Participants attendance at Momentum is through a nomination process.
Sales Academy
Our training and coaching programs broaden our lawyers' commercial development and entrepreneurial mindsets, improving how they sell as individuals and teams. BOOST: BD Accelerator is a virtual multi-module program offered to senior associates after they have attended the Creating Your Future: Senior Associate Intensive 1. Participants gain data-driven insights into what the best client developers do to help them develop career-long strategies for networking and building relationships with clients. Peer Coaching and partner insights are also woven in across the series. Successful Sales Conversations, is offered to all participants before they attend Momentum. Across two-virtual 90 minute sessions, participants explore research on what makes a successful sales meeting and learn the ACTIV questioning model, followed by an opportunity to rehearse an approach to sales conversations, guided by a professional coach. In addition, a range of optional self‑service virtual and in‑person courses, such as Social Selling, are available for those who wish to register independently. Legal learning programs
These programs focus on developing technical legal knowledge, applying legal knowledge, and honing legal skills.
HL Learning Hub On-demand digital learning resources that can be accessed at anytime, and include e-learning on a variety of topics, customized playlists and industry-leading external libraries. HL Dialogue
HL Dialogue enables Senior Associates through two elements. You receive ongoing, real‑time feedback throughout the year to help you understand expectations, build on strengths, and address development areas as you work.
You also have the Annual Dialogue Conversation, a focused discussion to reflect on achievements, identify development priorities, and align on next steps toward advancement. Together, they provide clarity on performance, development, and career progression within the firm.

Confidential coaching
Senior Associates have access to confidential, one to one coaching to support leadership, performance, and career planning. Coaching can be accessed through structured programs or one-off coaching conversations can accessed by request via your local People Team.
Career Insights
Career Insights is a group mentoring initiative, designed to offer Senior Associates access to partner perspectives in a supportive, cohort‑based setting.
Through Career Insights sessions, Senior Associates are invited to take part in informal discussions with partners about their career journeys, sharing real‑world examples of different progression pathways. Sessions may explore topics such as building a business case, collaboration, specialisation, networking, alternative career routes, and approaches to work-life balance.
The sessions were piloted locally in 2025 and are being gradually introduced in local offices. Availability and format may vary, and further details on upcoming sessions will be shared as the programme continues to develop.

Mentoring programs
Mentoring is available to you in different formats to support your evolving needs. The firm offers on-demand one-to-one mentoring, with intentional mentor matching, to ensure support aligns with specific career goals, leadership development needs, and practice-building ambitions. Mentoring plays a core role in strengthening development pathways and helping Senior Associates refine their practice planning, consider alternative career routes, and connect with senior leaders across the firm. Annual Career Progression briefings
To foster a culture of openness and transparency around career progression, the Advancement Committee hosts Career Progression briefings across regions, providing Senior Associates with the opportunity to build a greater understanding of the criteria, timelines, and pathways to Counsel and Partner as they consider their next career steps.
These sessions are offered in both in‑person and virtual formats and are typically held annually, with timing and availability varying by region.
